Book suggestion, on new urbanism:

Suburban Nation, by Duany. Actually its by this design firm, DPZ - Duany being one of them - they are the ultimate in new urbanists. Get it, you'll love it. All about traditional neighborhood design and how sprawl came about and sucked the life out of the country. Here's the amazon link:

Last week he e-mailed me, told me he'd left his wife and the military and is now in the adult gay film industry.

it's it's discouragingly all sameness for the most part. And though the people you speak of are the minority, they're also the ones who speak the loudest and are therefore heard the most. The result is that droves stay in the closet and the gay community moves no where, mired in it's own insecure world with little voice of reason. I believe in all of this changing, but I also believe it will be along path.

i have to agree that people become like that though because of low self-esteem, low self-confidence. and a need for attention. i suppose thats why so many people could identify with you danny, because you seem so stable, and un-fabulous (hehehe). (hopefully you know what i mean)

there's no such thing. The gay community would be alot better though if it weren't so self-oppressive, b*tchy and limited in its self-definition. Honestly, there'd be nothing wrong with defining oneself along the lines of sexuality if the community wasn't so #### self-limiting. Everyime I hear "celebrate diversity" I want to gag! The gay community knows little about diversity and alot about cloning. OK, i'll stop ranting about this now. i've said well over enough.

and likely.
I think most all of it falls back to the cycle of oppression. When you are in the majority group, you don't have to concern yourself with what an identity is, because it's taken care of for you by society. For people who are oppressed, an identity is formed, and frequently, with time, the majority group need not be present for oppression to occur. In other words, gays now do a fine job of oppressing themselves without the help of anyone else (even though some non-gays are still oppressive).
It's happened before, just as you say. Yes, people don't really change, do they?

Seems like a pretty good assesment of the future. I'm young, and my experiences with gay culture have been brief and few, but it does seem like all or most of the sense of comminity that we have is formed out of necessity. Once that's gone, there's going to be an even bigger rift than what is already present. What you're talking about already exists, though not on a large scale. There are always anomalies, as long as there are conformists there will be counter-agents.

since people are so caught up with aligning themselves with an identity and "fighting with the group", i have a theory of what the future will be like for gays. As gays are ultimately and eventually accepted, there will be a new split amongst those who align themselves with the mainstream and those who align themselves with counter-culture. I see it as a very natural phenomenon that's already happening. I think the gay community is held together with very weak glue and forced bonds of self-protection. As the need for this dissolves, so will the glue and quickly so. People will move quickly to realign themselves and a whole new war will break loose. Isn't that how people always work?

part of humans defining their existance is belittling others because life is fickle and most feel a need to protect their piece of the world by putting others down. It's very tribal to protect what is yours and destroy what is not because it's direct competition. Our society we live in today is very unnatural when it comes down to it. We live amongst so many people unlike ourselves in a myriad ways. That's why people are so desperate to define their identity because people feel so lost in this unnatural existance that only tells us we're American, but not much more than that.

But this preoccupation with aligning one’s self with a certain sexual identity, seems right in line with how our society operates. We are all grouped continuously—by age, race, class, gender--- this preoccupation with defining one’s self all has to do with our need to feel validated. People often seek to define themselves using sexual identity because that is how people often define others.

Not saying I agree with it--but I feel it's rather accurate.

The problem is that there are so many gay men out there struggling for some sort of identity and many of them are trying so hard to define exactly what gay is. Though similar circumstances exist amongst most gays, there's no absolute or 100% definable common experience, therefore, there's no absolute definable identity. I think that people in general, gay and straight, spend way too much time preoccupied with trying to define themselves along a line of sexual identity instead of allowing what comes naturally to come. The most secure people I meet out there are those who spend little time pondering this issue, whether they fit gender/sexual stereotypes or not. The truth is that there are far more insecure gay men out there than secure ones, so much so that I would say it's a crisis. I've said this before and I believe in it 100%, the real crisis in the gay community is insecurity. It's a problem that is never addressed. Instead everyone talks about the results of this problem as if they are the crisis such as AIDS, drugs, promiscuity, etc. These are crisis problems but they're only branches that stem from the trunk, which is insecurity and low self-esteem. It's a bad problem because it really creates a negative environment that is stifling for the development of a persons soul and character. That's why I believe it's important for gays not to spend too much time in that environment. I think it can be extremely toxic.

guide you to be a good person and do what's right. The problem with people here and their anti-capitilistic ideology is that they assume anyone making money is an inhumane, selfish ass. This isn't always true and that's severely immature, flawed ideology. Some of the best people I know also happen to be wealthy but they also happen to be extremely wise, good hearted people who care about the world. Bill Gates also happens to be one of those people. He's one of the world's richest men but he isn't some obnoxious, self-absorbed#####who is out buying up the world.
The same can also be said for those who aren't as lucky and vice versa. I know plenty of poor people out there who don't give a #### about the world or people around them. Basically, one can't draw a line of good vs bad along the same line as have vs have-not.

i'd also bet those people who are self-righteous in their anit-capitilism also come from either middle or upper class backgrounds. Money means something totally different when you grow up without it. It's easy to sit on your hippie hill and look down upon those who are working hard to make a life for themselves when it came to you rather easily. I can't stand yuppies either but what I really can't stand are self-righteous middle class hippies who are very out of touch with reality. Especially those who sell their hand-made wares at the market for inflated prices that a common man can't afford. These are the same people who then turn around and denounce capitilism.

The average cost of a 2 bedroom house in Wallinford and Fremont, the "anti-capitalist hippie" center of the city is approximately 490,000! Give me a break!

at the Essential Bakery over in Freemont having a salad on Saturday. I was sort of chatting with one of their employees. I asked whether they had a location in/around Belltown. I told him I only knew of Macrina Bakery. His reply was both startling and somehow really ####ing funny.

He replied with, "We'd never open a store in Belltown--if we did, I'd stop working here because I refuse cater to pretenscious snobs."

I then hit him up with a quick and appropriate, "I just bought a condo in belltown--I like that area."

You should have seen the look on his face--I loved it!

I'm very glad my undergrad was liberal arts but when the day comes to do a masters it will be something more career oriented. However, currently, things are heading in a certain direction that do not include school or anything of that sort.

this isn't the first time i've heard this and i'm not surprised to hear it. There's a substantial number of gays out there who actually like living on the margins of society and want nothing to do with the mainstream. Many of their ideas are however flawed because they're assuming that mainstream America is a homogenous group of failures, which obviously isn't true. To those gays who do want to stay marginilized until society reaches the "utopia" they're waiting on, I say go for it. For the rest of us, I say #### off to that gay minority because I certainly don't romanticise marginilization.

a definite superiority complex going on...and it's not necessarily a gay issue either. I see it more as the liberal "over throw the establishment" types and these just happen to be gay and are definitely turning it into a gay issue. Maybe they should just have their own little gay world to live in.

Bulletproof Monk. Hardly ever do I watch these "over-the-top-action-but-no-sense-of-plot" type of movies but I thought I'd give it a try. Big mistake. The directing and script was TERRIBLE. But...uh...at least it had Sean William Scott. just kidding. If you want to go see a good movie that no one has ever heard of check out "Ratcatcher" directed by Lynne Ramsay. Its a Scottish film and you can hardly understand the dialogue without the use of subtitles, but it is a GREAT movie. I could go on and on.

It's nice to have someone who isn't the standard bleeding heart gay liberal around to stoke things up. Though, I still think you could be a little more respectful of people's beliefs and not so hostile sometimes.

If there was one thing that I'd say about coming up here... do it now while you're in Seattle. You're sooo close, and yet it's just a world away (only 3 hours by plane to ANC).

The lights are amazing for this reason if no other... even the locals love em! Rarely does a local slow for moose, take pictures of the massive glaciers, or stay up all night with the midnight sun. But many a time have I been in the bars up here when somebody has come in and yelled "hey.. the lights are out" and the whole place pours out into the streets. They're just that special.

As for QC... what were you doing over there? It also ranks highly on my list of favorite places.

Good to see you up still.

Danny! A huge hello from beautiful Alaska We only chatted briefly here while I was in Seattle, but I wanted to say that I have arrived in the north and that you would LOVE it here! I see moose everyday, Mt. McKinley weekly and the northern lights all the time!

The Howard Dean crowd hasn't quite found it's voice up here yet, but we'll work on changing that

?: Have you ever been up to AK (or did Paul every have the luck to work up here in the Army)?

?: Would you ever consider coming up? You could do all the great northern national parks and get some amazing photos in!

?: Aside from the busy speaking tour, what have I missed in the 2 months that I've been off line?

Hope you and everyone down south is having a wonderful night and again... thanks for keeping this board up. It's appreciated by many of us.

What little alternative media we have left in this country were all over it.

It is people like you that keep those things alive. You will not see anything about Enron until something that will grab ratings happens. THAT is what is wrong with our media. As we learned in our journalism classes, if it doesn't bleed it doesn't lead.

Also, along those lines, we couldn't find Osama, so what do Bush's people say, well we need something so this war on terror.....biggest sham since the war on drugs.....doesn't go down the crapper.

As for putting a democrat in office right now, we still have a republican congress, so basically nothing is going to get done.

what it all boils down to is we have gotten ourselves into a big ole mess. the fault I see in it is blaming just ONE person.

As for our succession.....you guys would miss us and you know it

of media, we're so quick to believe everything we see on TV and get so much one sided info it's ridiculous. All we ever heard about was what a terrible dictator Saddam was and I don't argue with that. However, our media chose only to mention that story and failed to mention the many, many other dictators in this world. Why are we not concerned with those nations and their dictators? Please tell me. Also, I don't have faith in any man so closely connected with the business world, especially that of oil. Am I insane here or did everyone quickly forget about Enron? hello?! anybody!!! What I suggest is that some of you get a little dose of international news and information and then let's talk.

I think that Bush has done a good job, and for those knit pickers that are no wepons of mass destruction and wah wah wah. Saddam himself was one large weapon which was waiting to go off. I keep my opinions off this board usually, but in this instance whoever posted this on my behalf said one thing that struck me...Have a little faith in our President instead of bashing him for no strong reason!!!!

In the internet society in which we live we have become so hung up on how fast we can get info, goods, services...etc....If I order a cd or book and it is not there the next day I get pissed. Look at what it is going to take to rebuild a nation, a people, and an economy that has been thrashed by one Dictator. Someone the other day made the point that Rome was not built in a day.

I also think that the fact that Bush is asking for UN support says alot about the character of the war. I think it says, look we did what was right because you couldn't see the forest for the trees. Now that we have that all down to base level why not all get together and fix it. I do not see the Iraqi people being ABLE to do this on their own, and the more support we have from the rest of the world who did not support the US in the first place the better. The old addage goes "too many cooks in the kitchen spoil the broth." This is not a kitchen. What is going to have to happen is there must be an outpouring of support form every nation to show that yes the workd can come together and fix something that was very broken.

As for Chriaq saying he would not veto any UN resolution, I think he has seen the err of his first policies, not to mention the economic thrashing we have given France.

Chriaw is an idiot, Bush has done a job that is worthy of the office of the Leader of the free world, and he will be in office in 2004 to push the progress of what WE started. A war is not strated by one presiedent remember....It will not be Bush who "fixes" Iraq, because it will, and has taken more than two terms of a president. he has just started a long road of what is to become.

I don't know what will become of Iraq, it has the resourses and the backing to become a great nation, but there has to be alot of things that happen, and those take TIME. Do not ever think that this will be fixed in the next 4 years.

I never have posted a political view here, this is probaably incoherent ramblings, but it kind of puts together what goes on in my head.

OK I have tried to post this like 5 times and it won't work, am I being censored or something, ha ha just kidding...

As a "gay republican", i feel the need to respond to some of the posts below. It has been said below, but I re-affirm this point that my views are more aligned with the Republicans then the Dems on a variety of issues, and I don't feel the need to choose one party over another just for gay rights. My life has more to it then just being gay, and while I support gay rights, I am also going to support other things I believe in, and right now the big goverment over-taxiation policies of the Democrats overweigh their "support" of gay rights.

You say that you can't be gay and be Republican. Let me say this. In the 1800s it was the REPUBLICANS that lead the charge to end slavery. It was SOUTHERN DEMOCRATS that strongly advocated segregation in the South during the 50s and 60s. Poltical parties views are the result of the social climate of the times. There is currently a large contigent of the Republican party that is holding on to old social standards. Progress is being made. I went to school in Vermont, and the Republicans there were largely in support of gay rights. Don't forget Mayor Guliani (sp?), a Republican, and a supporter of gay rights. Now I ask you this, do you think a democrat in the deep south is going to go out and support gay rights? Fact of the matter is there are more Republicans in rural areas then Democrats, and rural areas tend to be more conservative socially (by a lot). Things will change as the country continues to accept us, and its not going to happen overnight. Progress is being made, and I feel strongly that it is people like me that will gradually change the shape of the views of the party. To believe the hype that you can't be gay and be republican is narrow-minded.

To wrap up my little rant here....I am POSITIVE that there are many many people who share my views, but feel scared because they don't want to be thought of as anti-gay. Don't be scared, you are who you are, don't let others tell you what to believe and what not to.

Danny said:
I'd bet my life that the majority of log cabin republicans are deeply repressed individuals from states such as Texas that aren't known for their open mindedness. I think it's natural for these people to align themselves with a mind-set and political party that best fits their needs and what they are comfortable with as individuals. The apple usually doesn't fall far from the tree! It really shows that people don't always think for themsleves and when it comes to social norms, individuals are very prone to go with the crowd because it's the safest route. This goes just as much for gays who often can't think for them
