It's not about someone being told to vote for a candidate but rather about spreading the word. It's especially important for someone like Dean whose campaign is based heavily on internet word of mouth. It's about people with a voice using it and this is the point you've missed. No one is telling anyone to vote for anyone. Did you hear that I told you to vote for Dean? Nope, I just said who the man is and what he stands for...no more than that. What's so wrong with that?
I think someone being so angry about this is silly.

No, I wouldn't feel any differently if you were in a "celebrity endorsement" press release for John Kerry. I'm sure they'll be plenty of those. If Dan from the Real World Miami does the same thing for John Kerry I will think it is equally as silly. Again, while I've supproted Kerry to this point, I couldn't even tell you know if I'd vote for him yet, it's way too early.

Again, I'm not calling anyones viewpoints or voting agendas silly...I'm referring to the need to publicize "celebrity endorsements" as something that matter, silly. Who cares? This isn't a knock on YOU - pull yourself away from it - do you care who John Travolta endorses?

I certainly wouldn't remove any rights from anyone expressing their feelings.

I just think its silly. I can't imagine there are people out there that care what celebrities or people from reality shows candidates are, but I guess there are plenty. I just hope this doesn't start a flurry of press releases from ex castmembers of Big Brother on their voting preferences.

For what? For putting my views out there, something that everyone has the right to do. You're missing the point here buddy. This is specifically aimed at young gay voters and that's the reason this endorsement was made. I obviously have a connection there and as has been said, if someone votes for a candidate simply based on my support, then that's their problem. I would really hate to see people make dumb decisions like that. However, as the press release says, Dean's campaign is based widely on word of mouth and that's why I feel it important to throw in my two cents. Probably had I supported Kerry, You would feel alot better about it.

No offense Danny, but this is worthless and something I'd think you'd be ashamed of. If someone is going to vote for someone because Danny from the Real World says so, should they really be voting? How 'bout letting people come to their own conclusions on candidates.

By the way, who is Teck from Hawaii endorsing? Richard Hatch from Survivor? Joe Millionaire? How will I ever decide on a candidate.

providing everyone with blanket coverage would absolutely bankrupt this country. the fundamental problem is that healthcare is grossly overpriced in this country. Vioxx and celebrex ($2 a pill)are nothing more than a fancy aspirins (2 cents a pill), yet it is grossly overprescribed. doctors no longer care about patients but about out earning each other. these are problems neither DEMOCRATS nor republicans are addressing.

And a very important point you are missing..while I, as a gay guy, would like to see same sex unions legalized, there are many more americans who don't want that. One man's progression is another's regression. I think gays should have legal unions, recognized by state and federal gov'ts. WITH the same benefits of heterosexual married couples..I don't need to have it called "marriage".

It's coming and probably sooner than any of us think. We'll need a more progressive government to help make that happen though and gays have to be a positive part of that change. Angry demanding want get us far. Having Canada nearby with it's new attitude will really speed things along as well as television.

Secondly, who the hell said we should be striving for socialism? I like parts of it but certainly don't think that we should be moving in that direction. I'm not naive buddy! Third, I say Canada is becoming progressive. Look at their latest laws on drugs and same sex marriage. This while we continue to waste money on a drug war and Bush announces today that he wants to pass an anti-gay marriage law! That's call regression my friend.

Danny Roberts Endorses Gov. Howard Dean for President
"Real World" Star Joins Growing List of Celebrity Endorsements

Washington, D.C. - Danny Roberts has endorsed former Vermont Governor Howard Dean for the Democratic nomination for President in 2004. Roberts, best known for his role on MTV's "The Real World - New Orleans," joins a growing list of gay and lesbian celebrities endorsing Dean, including television star Chad Allen and rock star Melissa Etheridge.

"I believe that Dean represents a shift back to the center where America is cooperating with the world to make this a better place for all people," Roberts told Out for Dean during a recent interview. "We've gotten too far away from this in the past few years and it's made this a scary time to live," he added.

Dean first gained visibility among gays and lesbians when he became the only Governor to sign into law a state statute recognizing gay civil unions. But almost all the candidates for the Democratic nomination have declared their support for similar policies.

Roberts thinks Dean's overwhelming support in the gay community derives from his stand on other issues. "I love that he makes affordable healthcare for all Americans a priority and that he sees the intrinsic need to protect the environment while balancing business interests," says Roberts. "The man represents many perfect compromises on issues between the left and right."

Roberts, who has been involved with the Dean for America campaign since before Dean announced his candidacy, believes that efforts to label Dean a liberal are political tactics.

"He's truly not radical at all!" exclaims Roberts, who notes that the Governor kept Vermont's budget balanced for five terms.

Roberts's advice for overcoming the perception that Dean is too liberal to be elected?: "Spread the word! So much of Dean's support is through word of mouth and the internet."

has a special breed of liberalism though that's highly rooted in fanatically naive dreams of a hippie utopia. This all created by people that live in a Seattle bubble and who know so little about the real crap that goes on out there in this big world. I'm saying this and I am a liberal for the most part!

I'm sorry man but that's one thing I really do miss about Atlanta...it's the diversity of people. Beyond brown skin there are so many types of people from so many walks of life. It's way more difficult to find that here. That's what I'm saying. Like I said before, you almost know what a person will be like before they even open their mouth, not that they're bad people. Just predictable. One of the main reasons Atlanta is more diverse because it has a more diverse representation of companies from TV and music, finance, travel all the way across to standard industrial production. Seattle is much more limited in it's job offerings.

i never said either is better my friend...i'm only defending my home. Did I mention anything about better? Diverse, yes, better, no. I only bash Seattle, not because I don't like it because I do...I bash it because everyone here is so blind to it's faults. People here want to imagine that they live in this perfect utopia and it's just not. that's all Jason.

even though you're wrong about it just being black, you're defending Seattle by saying it's so Asian. OK, once again, there's one group being represented. If Atlanta isn't diverse "because it's only black", then Seattle isn't diverse for being only Asian. Regardless, you're wrong about Atlanta...it's not some backwoods southern town like so many want to believe it is. It's the financial and cultural capitol of the south and extremely international thanks to the business presence there. Do you know how many companies have their headquarters there? It's also about twice the size of Seattle and has far more people. I get so sick of people here looking at Atlanta as if it were inferior.

I have been to Atlanta once, in fairness, I have never lived there as you have..but it seems to me that a city on the coast, so close to California and to an Asian port would be much more diverse than a city in the deep south..so..I will have to defer to your opinion on this one, since you have lived there and I haven't.

I agree with everything you said. I just recently moved back to Atlanta. The hardest thing for me is the partying, I get so TIRED. The bars where I lived before, Minneapolis, closed at 1am! Atlanta has truly come a long way. I'm glad to be home. Altough, the blue laws...bars closing at 12am on Sundays...needs to go! What part of the state is Rockmart?

why?

well...many reasons. I was sick of the summer heat first off. It had always lived in and around there my entire life so wanted new challenges and surroundings. I knew way too many people in town and it as always the same old crap. Since then though, Atlanta has made massive improvements. I never thought the city would impress me as much as it recently has. The fact that so many people are living downtown now is awesome and the nightlife is kickin my but. Forget the fact that it has so much good food and good restaurants. I'm really missing it now.

have you ever been to Atlanta? we're not only talking about color here...asians are one group...Atlanta has so many groups...so much so that gay bars are split up into ethnic groups. Have you ever been to a latino or black gay bar? beyond color we're talking about political views and nationalities. I've met one French person in Seattle in a year and half and hand full of Brits. I hardly call that diverse. Atlanta beats this cities#####when it comes to diversity.

I completely agree with you yet feel that these representations are still happening today.

Of course, they were extremely exacerbated in the 50's and 60's, yet they have evolved over time and are still in full effect.

I look at it the same way, especially coming from the South and understaning so poignantly how these steretypes harm people. Again though, it's ok to show these gay steretypes because they do exist...just show the other side of the coin. That's all I ask.

Sorry to be adding to the mix so late (had class this am). Just wanted to say that I agree with you hands down on this. I absolutely love your "monkey in a cage" analogy. Personally, I've always compared how gays are shown on film and tv today to the way African Americans and Native Americans were shown in the 50's, 60's. The "token" black man or "token" Indian was always some cliched stereotype that was never close to any true representation of a person from that ethnicity. I can't wait til the day when we look back on tv today with the same feelings of disgust about poor representation of gays on tv today, not unlike those feelings we have about 1950's, 60's film and tv.

I totally agree with that. However, I don't agree w/ what the media is getting society used to. The stereotypes of gay people bother me alot. Hell, stereotypes in general bug me. I think that society just needs to get used to the fact that there are people out there that appear straight but definately aren't. It's like the MIB movies: there are aliens among us and we don't even realize it.

It is my observation that because homosexuality is gaining so much media attention, people in general are becoming more accepting due to constant exposure. As people become willing to accept it, it will be easier for closeted individuals to come out. The stereotyping that occurs with some of this exposure will mitigate when friends and family members learn the people they love are gay. We are a people of tolerance. Although it's hard to change the collective mind of a society, eventually we adjust to repetition. I'm happy that we are no longer a taboo subject.

Hi
Today I bought “Play: The B Sides” ( didn’t even know there is a b sides album) and I just love it. Moby is a real genius. Especially “Sunday” (not the one from the Album 18, it’s a different song) is just fantastic. “Running” is also really great.
So what do you think of Moby? I just love every bit of music he ever made, his sad songs (My Weakness, One of the Mornings and so many else are just perfect) .I can’t wait till he’s releasing a new Album (whenever that might be)

it's true and shows like this should be taken with a grain of salt. However, how can we as gays ever expect to be taken seriously when increasingly we're stereotyped as being one type of person that is "to be laughed at". Yes, you guys are loving this show because it makes you laugh...it's comedy. And that's how America will look at all of us increasingly, as something to laugh at like monkeys in a cage at the zoo. Sorry guys, but that's not the way I want to be seen. Shows like this are fine and I don't have a problem with them. I just have a problem with the fact that this is all TV can offer us and portray us as. Like everything else, they're going for what's easy to sell and put out there and it's a shame.

I made some of the very same comments to friends last night, and they told me I should lighten as it was all in pure fun.
They compared it to the image of the beer gut straight man, watching sports continuously—essentially saying that there are profiles for every type of person, yet caveats exist within each of those groups.

Danny, how would you respond to something like this?

I didn't see it but I have one thing to say about it. Could we please stop with the stereotypes?! This is like creating a show called "Black eye for the white man" as if all blacks have a certain style and cutlture to pass onto their helpless white counterparts. This ridiculous show assumes that every gay man is all style and every straight man can't help himself. I know plenty of straight guys who can run circles around some gay men out there. Who the hell said that gay men have so much style? I think the oppposite is true because i've seen plenty of gays who have 0 class and ability to dress themselves. Coming from the south and remembering so much of what was gay there, the word gaudy comes to mind.

I am just visiting Seattle, thinking of moving here and just checkin' the town out. This does correspond with Danny's comments, and pretty much had the same thoughts. I am staying at a hostel in seattle (the international), they have a good size kitchen, but yet last night when I wanted to actually cook something, I was at a loss of where I had seen a supermarket. This was late so I could not go to Pike's Market (it was after 5). It was very disconcerting, where was the staple of American living, the supermarket?
I had a discussion with an English fellow whom just got deported because he was canned from his summer job. We realized that one the English are a drinking culture, beer goes with everything. Yet, Americans are an eating culture. No matter what you do there is a hostess cake that is perfect for it. Interesting to note, but it did not satisfy my stomach at the time. The conclusion is that I ended up eating out, again. Could be worse though in retrospect, it could have been the spanish inquisition with service by Cardinal Biggles.
As for the bums and crackhead/crazies. Some of them are scary. Now I am from NYC. I have been to some of the worst areas of those parts. Once a black guy came up to our drill rig with a shotgun and said, "You better leave, someone is going to get killed hea." Swear to God. Anyway, it puts me on the defensive where ever I get propositioned by them. However, I have not been on the bus. I have travelled everywhere in Seattle by foot. Mainly downtown, Capital Hill, Universit
