...take him to places where you two can be "out and about". Being in the military, your occupation prevents you from really living like you want to live, so take him away from that. Go on leave/vacation to a family friendly area (Los Angeles, San Diego, Seattle, Atlanta, just to name a few). He'll appreciate the freedom.

How do you know it's the one?

For me, it was the first time that I thought I wasn't good enough. I was the ####y type that thought my sh*t didn't stink, he brought me right back down to earth. He caught me off guard and it hit me like a ton of bricks...

...don't be too loud about it. Going to his military dining functions as his date would also be a little on the bold side.

It's going to be hard but you can prevent anything drastic from happening.

Don't get too obvious around people that he knows. Inviting his co-workers to dinner could bring on some minor explaining, esp. when you break out your travelling pictures.

If you go to a gay bar and you run into some military folk, they're probably too busy checking out other guys to even be concerned with your situation.

Don't exchange your vows in a military church...

I'm poking fun, but it is a serious situation. My only advice, be DISCRETE (blur your face if you find yourself making out with him on t.v.)

Hey guys...I was so bored today so I hopped online and I found this site. I just read through many of the posts. Some were flattering, some were insightful, some were funny and some were just plain retarded. I have to thank all of you who gave kind words. To answer some of your questions and correct some of you:

    * my tatto is chinese for courage. I got it 2 years ago when I came to the full conclusion that in order to be happy in my life, I had to be honest with myself. I made the promise to myself to start living my live in a fully honest way, which also meant being fair to others, especially females. Yes I dated women all through college and pretty much up until close to the beginning of the show, but that doesn't mean that I was confused or didn't understand what was going on. I have always been a very self-aware person and for many years have known the real truth about my sexuality. I started having feelings around the age of 15, but didn't come to a real understanding of them until early in college. Through time and experience, I learned to accept my reality increasingly until finally at the age of 21 or 22, I realized that dating women would no longer make me happy and I realized that dating them was also extremely unfair and wrong to the women. This was a lesson that I learned through others as well as my own personal experiences. (All you guys out there who are dragging women through relationships for your own selfish reasons where there is no real love and an alternate motive, stop and think about what you're doing. Is it really fair for these women who truely love you, but are destined to be ignored, never fully satisfied emotionally as well as physically and possibly dropped at a later point in life when you can no longer deny your true passions?)

    * Paul and I are still together in a loving relationship, and are soon moving the west coast. We plan to be together forever.

    * I think young guys in highschool and below need to be more careful with tossing their sexuality around so brashly. I know it's a great feeling to be free and I'm happy for you, but there are people out there who'd love to hurt you. Please be careful and reasonable. Look out for yourself!

    * Yes, I really am gay and really have a boyfriend named Paul who IS in the military currently and whom will most likely NEVER reveal his identity.

*For those of you who don't already know, check out my personal website at www.countrytoconcrete.com. I'm working on getting an undergrad scholarship to award late this fall. Check it out.

*Thanks guys! Much love to you all.
    Danny

coming out
Posted by Danny on 7/26/2001 at 17:00:53
IP: 24.25.38.48

there's no easy advice here. Everyone's situation is different, so i'm not sure what to say. My only advice is that you should be completely secure in who you are; possibly financially independant; and know that it's not a cure-all to your problems. I think so many younger guys feel naively that if they come out, all there problems will be solved. That's not always the case and often it only causes more problems. Don't get me wrong, it's a very important step in life and very liberating, but care should be taken and it should be well thought out. Brashly announcing it to the world could be asking for trouble. Be smart about it. There are many people out there who'd love to hurt you.

IP: 24.25.38.48

What's up guys...just checking in during lunch to see what's happening here in board land. Been reading alot of posts about RW11...people searching for the house and scoping the scene out. That's cool and all, but by doing that, you're killing the authenticity of the experience for the kids in the house as well as making their lives much more difficult. During the taping of my show, there was nothing more annoying than groupies hanging out around the house and following us around, whether they were supporters or haters of the show. The kids in the house just want to be left alone to live their lives, so keep that in mind. Being part of the show is stressful enough without being hounded by outsiders.
Gotta run and pick Paul up from work. Be back soon.

so many good posts to respond to.

first off, Jim, I think working out and exercise is so so important. I think the reason so many people today have so many social and mental problems is based on the fact that people don't get enough excercise. I'd be a basket case if I didn't.

secondly, John...you're half right, half wrong. People are chosen for the show for different reasons. I wasn't chosen at all because i'm gay, but rather because of certain personality traits. Being gay was a minor detail that was edited to become major. As for the formula you speak of...you're so right. The formula they've developed is so tired and will soon burn itself out. Isn't that how all tv works?

older men

IP: 24.25.36.140

I think brotherly/fatherly friendships and advice are great, especially here on this board. Unfortunately, these relationships often turn sexual because of young guys who are in turmoil over their sexuality and older guys who take advantage. I do however have several older friends that I love and don't have this problem with. I just know it exists out there because i've seen it too much. It really, really bothers me. There's a reason it's not accepted in the straight world and the same rules apply in the gay world. Some just don't want to accept this fact.

let me restate that not all older men pray on younger men. I don't intend to hurt anyone here. This is just a reality in the gay world that almost seems to be accepted. Personally, I think it's pretty twisted. These young guys running to older men for support and the older men take advantage of the situation. This isn't always the case though and I applaud those older men who are good people and truely do good. Just wanted to know what you guys think about it.

from reading your post, i'm not sure if i'd say your gay or not. Just because you have feelings of love for a guy does not mean that you're gay. Now, if you feel sexual feelings for him, that's different story. I have several straight male friends that really love me, but it's not sexual. I think you need some experience in your life.

Thanks for the birthday wishes everybody. I'm not sure what I'm doing because Paul and my friends are going to surprise me. Happy b-day JL>

first off, unfortunately, I know nothing about finding lost family members.

Secondly, I have to go on a tirade for a minute. Sunshine, you brought up a subject I was thinking about earlier today (even though the story you brought up is a little more extreme). Today, I was thinking about how bad it is that older men like to date and pray on younger guys. It really bothers me. There's a shortage of older role models out there in the gay community because many of these older men would rather sleep with the younger guys than guide them. Don't get me wrong, of course not all older men fall into this category, but sadly I feel like most do. What do you guys feel about this? Especially older men on the board, what do you have to say? I debated this with a friend the other day.

I think you'll be very happy with Athens. It's a very bohemian town with a diverse population. Many students there are serious, but there's also a big party scene like at any other college. The town is full of good music and art as well as anything else you want to get your hands on. The majority of students are from Georgia, since Georgia awards free rides to it's highschool graduates with a 3.0 GPA or higher (Georiga's the ####). There's also plenty to do outdoors around the town, which is one reason I loved it so much. It only takes 2 hours to reach the North Ga mountains and an hour to reach Atlanta. I've been to alot, alot of schools over the past year speaking and honestly, even though i'm biased, none of them have come close to what UGA is. I'm being honest when I say this. The campus is beautiful, the kids there are cool (all 32,000) and there's a huge amount of majors and minors offered. It has some of the best psychology, education and business departments in the country. It also has the largest indoor sports facility in the country that's free to students. #### I miss it! Good luck.

OK, got you. Coming out to my parents was based on several different reasons.
    1) I reached a point in my life where I felt secure and confident in who I was and What paths I was taking.
    2) Going on the show obviously required me to come out clean to them.
    3) Meeting Paul made coming out easier.
    4) I was stepping into adulthood and being an adult means being honest to yourself and those around you, even if it's tough.

sexual identity

IP: 24.25.36.140

NB, let me expound a little here on a subject that people often confuse. There's always this talk about "straight acting" and "gay acting" and being gay and being straight. The categories are often tossed around and used one in the same. The mistake here is that people are confusing sexual identity with sexual preference. If you study psychology or human development, you understand that the two categories are completely different. Behavior, referring to the way someone acts, is sexual identity. A persons sexual identity doesn't always point to a persons sexual preference. That clear things up?

B-i'm still reading that book and will continue posting quotes from it on my journal page. I believe that some higher power exists. We can't be the highest power...if that's the case, then we're in trouble. The problem today is that people are being spoonfed their religion and it comes in a wheaties box that's all packaged up in a pretty box with directions and lacking in substance. That's not how spirituality works. People will eventually realize this as our societies evolve to higher states.

To David who posted earlier today

IP: 24.25.36.140

Was just reading through today's posts (i'm always reading even if i'm not posting) and I came across a post from someone named David who's depressed. What really bothered me were the replies. A couple of guys suggested that David come out to his family immediately to alleviate the problem. I have to disagree here for I think this could possibly compound the problems. Coming out is in NO way a cure-all. I think some naive guys feel that if they only come out, then all their problems will majically disappear. Often times, coming out at a young age, espcially to the family only makes more problems. Hopefully for you David, your family will understand, but my recommendation is that you wait until you're completely confident in yourself and from what you write, you obviously aren't. It seems to me that your problems run much deeper than your closted homosexuality. It seems that you also have social anxiety issues since you wrote that you hate socializing. Unfortunately for you, socializing is part of being human and is necessary for a successful and happy life. One guy suggested to you that you get professional help and I think in your case this would definitely benefit you. We all need someone to talk to about our problems and since you don't have close friends, a therapist can play this role for you. I also suggest trying hard at developing friendships, especially at this point in your life. Friends are crucial in life and having satisfying relationships with friends makes life more meaningful. Keep us updated on what's going on in your life. Take care.much love,

They aren't real communites; just broken up neighborhoods seperated by walls and gates. No one knows each other because they're too busy driving in their cars. You must not live in one or otherwise you'd understand. Wish you knew what it's like to spend half a day in a car with no human contact. not fun.

text book meaning...this means a city where most of the inhabitants drive to the city to work by day and live in the ####ty suburbs by night. much caused by white flight. For example, Atlanta has ring cities now because so many people live in the suburbs that highrises popped in concentrated areas around certain freeway exchanges. That's not a real community, that's a car community. If a show was taped in one of those cities, they might as well give them a really nicely decorated car to live in because that's where most of the action will happen. I remember living in Atlanta and spending hours stuck in traffic. I would take a book to read with me on my drive home, which normally took 15 minutes, but would take up to 2 hours in the evening.

how is shipping raw materials to 3rd world contries profitable? Easily my friend. It works out wonderfully for these American companies who pay these workers producing the goods next to nothing. It also worked very well for Europe a couple hundred years ago when America and its slaves worked under the same system.

modeling's a load of crap. Great pay, but an overwhelming load of crap and crappy people. It makes me sad when I hear kids wanting to be models, like my little bro for instance. I tell that kid, "hey, if it falls in your lap, go for it, but please don't spend your life hoping to be one". It's just sad.

Neither do I buy gap, I get a large amount of my clothes second hand.
I've never claimed to support the Gap (their clothes suck). Modeling for a company is work, not politics. Being a model for someone means in no way that you support that company. As a matter of fact, i'd say most models don't actually like the companies they're modeling for. It's work and people have bills to pay.

For that matter, WHAT is not made in 3rd world contries today. As for our policy with China, we simply should NOT be doing widespread business with them until their government allows their people to be free in all ways. Free Trade and China
Posted by Danny on 7/14/2001 at 19:41:36
IP: 24.25.36.140

Sorry for just disappearing earlier guys. My computer looked up so I just made dinner. Just read through some posts and one caught my attention. The post was a reply to one of mine yesterday about free trade to China. Here's my response to you:
you can be shocked all you want about my stance, but I feel it's only based on history and fact. Yes, in a utopian world, an open relation with China would be beautiful. These improvements you speak of would be wonderful and the world would be a better place. Now, lets step back to reality. The only thing that will happen is the US taking advantage of a developing nation. Do you know what happens when American companies have access to millions of disposable workers who have no workers unions? Do you know what happens when American companies do business and set up production in areas with no or little environmental regualations. It's called disaster. That's the truth of this situation. I truely wish the visions you speak of were reality, but this is by far no perfect world. Open nation simply cannot denounce a government and its policies and then turn around and do business with it. This is not about the Chinese people, this is about the Chinese government and its policies. Just because a people are adopting western styles and attitudes does not mean they are free people.

Hey guys...gotta go...been on here way too long today. I'll leave you with a tid-bit of info I learned in ecology back in school.
It's awesome that China is developing, but here's the scary truth. If China, with it's 1 billion + population, reached our level of development and consumption, the world would be destroyed in a very short period of time. Current practices are completely unsustainable. Compare our measly population of 265 million to their 1 billion. Imagine the resources and energy that would require. That's why it's so important for us to develop new, cleaner, sustainable technologies and practices to use ourselves and pass on to developing nations. Wake the #### up Bush you moron!

I started college studying environmental health science, but couldn't hang with so much organic chem. i picked French up as my major from being my minor. it was always so easy for me and came naturally. I love that i speak a foreign language. Studying a subject does not always have to be job-related, as so many people think in this country. Americans overall just have a lack of education period. It's looked at as being negative for some reason, when in reality it's the most important thing in life. Education equals power and enlightenment.

free trade

our free trade with China is not some kind act that we're claiming it to be. Instead, it's a huge market where we can dump our goods to be sold, all for our own financial gain. It's also nations like China where our companies run to in order to find cheap, disposable labor and lax environmental regulations.
I too am sick of the US being a world police, but facts are facts and our new relationship with China is hypocrytical and self-improving only.

it's the AUDOBON zoo...that's a must see, including Audobon park around it. Everybody has to take the streetcar up St Charles and see the Garden district. That'll also take you by the Belfort house. Bourbon is a must, but only for a small amount of time. Uptown is a better place to hangout (that's where Jacqu'imos is) For a real taste of what new orleans is. Venture off of St charles a few blocks on any street and see the worst ghettos in the country. Don't walk though! Only in a car or you'll probably end up in trouble. New Orleans is predominantly poor, ghettos that are unbelievable. i think people should get a real taste of that town instead of the candy coated tourist spots. I love how the RW nicely edited all that stuff out for the most part.
