the obviously the marriage has religious overtones. What I see Bush trying
to do here is block any semblence of a legal partnership and the rights
thereunto, including taxe and property rights. People are so hung up on
the semantics of this but it doesn't matter what you want to call it, the
same rights will eventually be stripped. I'm comfortable however with
calling it a domestic partnership in order to be sensitive to religious
groups. Again though, I think Bush is working on keeping gays from any
sort of rights regardless of what you want to call that union.

You are right, though, that most American's are moderate. Sadly, most
American's aren't gay (and many of those who aren't feel "icky" about it).
Ultimately, the only people that this really affects are too busy living
lives that requires hopping bar to bar looking for the, if you'll pardon
the phrase, #### of the week. I hate to sound so pessimistic, but I think
the harsh reality of the situation is that most gay Americans simply don't
care enough about gay marriage to stand up against treated as second class
citizens.
As it is, I am one of those few that knows it will affect my life. My man
and I want it guarenteed under law that we have all the rights afforded us
that married couples do. I think after (almost) 8 years together we
frickin deserve it.
I think most American's....

are too moderate and though they may believe tha gay marriage is wrong,
they can ultimately see this as the start of opening pandora's box on
limiting civil right's in other areas for all American's. This is the
Christian Right wing's control of Republicans at play.

Sadly, I don't see any people (at least ones in the right positions to
make a difference) actually standing up to say this is wrong. I think
there's a much greater possibility that this is going to be one of those
issues that gets passed without so much as a shout.

and that's why i'm not too worried. again, i just think too many Americans
are moderate plus times are changing quickly for gays as far as acceptance
goes. It's just scary to see a president backing such legislation. I think
in the future, people will look back on this event and compare it to
politicians working to keep blacks from having certain rights.

a constitutional amendment to define marriage as a hetero only
institution, but that is nearly impossible to accomplish. Just look at the
history of the ERA amendment. After 10 years it failed. You need 75% of
the states legislatures to ratify an amendment. That would give civil
rights groups, including the gay community time to counteract this threat.
I don't think a constitutional amendment would make it through all that.

good morning ctoc...i have to comment on this marriage issue. Some of you
have stated that the issue of marriage is one of religion/faith and to a
degree it's true but you're not altogether correct. Our nation's
governement has always played a huge role in marriage and allowing/not
allowing certain people to be married. From not allowing blacks the right
to be married to outlawing polygomy, one can't fully say that marriage in
the US is a religious issue only. Whether you personally would like the
right or not, it's fundamentally not right for the government to block a
basic civil freedom like that and that goes for everyone.

Good night.
DAttending the 2001 Creating Change Conference of the National Gay and
Lesbian Task Force (NGLTF) in Milwaukee, I found myself awestruck to be
sitting in the same room with Richard Goldstein. Awestruck, that is, until
Goldstein opened his mouth and started to speak.
Goldstein is executive editor of the Village Voice and one of America’s
most prolific progressive writers. His thesis was simply this: the
greatest threat to progress for queer Americans is not the troglodytic
religious right, but gay conservatives.
The idea that gay righties like Norah Vincent, Andrew Sullivan, and
Jonathan Rauch pose a greater threat to gay progress than reactionary
straights like William Bennett and Robert Barr is antithetical to liberal
thought.
Bennett once declared that homosexuality "takes 30 years off your life…The
best available research suggests that the average life span of male
homosexuals is around 43 years of age." The best research Bennett could
find was an erroneous study by the discredited psychologist Paul Cameron
(expelled from the APA for shoddy and unethical research methods) that
surveyed obits in urban gay papers at the height of the AIDS epidemic.
Bob Barr authored the infamous Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA).
Vincent, Sullivan, and Rauch think gays should be entitled to the full
moral and civil equality that marriage connotes.
Who are the good guys in this battle?
Goldstein’s argument makes sense when examined through a lens of
progressive "queer" theory - a lens that makes gay identity the raison
d’etre of the gay individual. Queer theory questions the need to extend
such an "oppressive" institution as marriage to the gay community.
Marriage is, after all, a misogynistic paradigm that keeps women barefoot
and pregnant. Why extend such a pathological atrocity to a community that
is already oppressed? Further, why should the gay community seek to
emulate a heterosexist society which is unaccepting of multiculturalism
and which itself cannot successfully handle the responsibilities and
challenges of marriage?
To be fair to Goldstein, he has written persuasively that marriage is
indeed an "acceptable" goal for gay activist energy. However, he sees it
as simply a matter of fairness: if straights can have it, then why not
queers? This is not a ringing endorsement of an institution that possesses
so much moral potential.
The more relevant point is that Goldstein sees the advocates of marriage
as anathema to the belief that all gays, by virtue of their identity, are
poster children for the queer left. Queers like Goldstein fear that the
larger society will one day fully accept gays into all facets of daily
life, thus fatally endangering the viability of queer separatism.
Andrew Sullivan, an openly HIV-positive gay thinker, has devoted much of
his rhetorical energy to establishing a middle ground between rightist
prohibitionism of gay love and leftist liberationism from straight
society. Without each other, he argues, these two phenomena would cease to
be so popular. The emotional anger from each fuels the need for the other.
Many critics of those who burst the queer bubble also criticize
African-Americans, for instance, who do not adhere to the thinking of the
traditional progressive civil rights paradigm. Condie Rice, Colin Powell,
and Ward Connerly are sellouts who "aren’t really black" and have
"disowned" their own people.
Having shaken Ward Connerly’s hand and listened to him articulate his
personal story, it is particularly malodorous to think that the gentleman
I met is any less black because he happens to oppose affirmative action
programs. It is equally as racist to suggest the latter as it is to
proffer the notion that Connerly might be an inferior human because he is
black.
Ward Connerly makes the same argument about the "civil rights industry" as
Sullivan makes about the queer left. Without the negative emotion
motivated by absolutist identity thinking, lots of progressive civil
rights activists would lose their jobs. It’s in the interest of the left
to keep the hate alive by targeting black conservatives.
The walls that keep us isolated from other races, religions, and sexual
orientations keep us hidden within ourselves. The goal of serving a larger
collective identity unit has its many benefits, among them greater
collective power to move hearts and minds. This ability to advocate,
however, is inherently limited when unorthodox perspectives are enslaved
to the ease of party line arguments.
The lugubriousness that constitutes much left-wing thought today, and
which has pushed political correctness to an untenable extreme, will
become a victim of its own narrowness. Andrew Sullivan and Ward Connerly
speak for an unknown, but certainly underestimated quantity of good folks
who want to rewrite the way business is conducted in America. More neocons
and libertarians and paleocons and Republicans who happen to be black or
gay or Latino or female will inevitably emerge as identity constructs
become less rigid.
One day, the sellouts won’t be so easy to kick around.

Saw a show on the history channel. A lot of the reason had to do with
racism and such. Articles were run in newspapers claiming that if black
guys smoked pot they would run wild and rape white women. I know in Texas
it had to do with the fact that a lot of Mexicans smoked pot and during
the great depression they wanted to get rid of them because they took alot
of the jobs away from others.
