Thanks for stating the facts...though Beto doesn't mean any harm...this
person is basing their beliefs on ignorance and the idea that gays have
grown up in a bad childhood. It's just not true. mine was no worse than
gay counterparts and better in some ways. I've got gay friends who had
excellent childhoods with everything a child needs from support to love
and an excellent bond with thier parents and family with NO molestation.
It doesn't mean that some gays didn't have a bad childhood but so did alot
of straights.

Beto's Theory From Below

Beto: one of the biggest questions in developmental psychology today is
the "Nature vs. Nurture" issue, as I am sure you are familiar with.
Psychologists have been arguing for years on what affects human beings
more: their environment or their genetics. The most comprehensive answer
to date is that it is almost 50/50. However, obviously some traits
depend more on genetics (eye color, skin color, height) and some more on
environment (senescence, personality, etc.). As a current psychology
major in college, I have reviewed much of the research on sexuality and
the most held theory is that it is mostly based on genetics. Two unique
studies, one in California and one in London, yielded results of
possible genetic differences in heterosexuals and homosexuals DNA on a
specific gene. To credit you, though, indeed I do not doubt that some
homosexual individuals out there have been adversely affected by their
not so cordial environments they were raised in. However, it is ignorant
to assume that most, or even a majority, of homosexual people actually
chose their lifestyle becaues of a hard childhood. From a non scientific
standpoint, and I am sure Danny, Paul, and all the other gays on this
board could let you know, I don't recall any point in my childhood when
I was molested or put in any trying situation as such. Also, I can't
remember when I started to like other guys. It seemed that I was always
attracted to them. So, in your theory, as a young child (around 4 or 5),
I would have the cognitive ability to look into my not so distant past,
be adversely affected by it, and at that point (in my toddler mind)
choose to be homosexual. The idea seems outlandish. Read up some more,
bro, and I'm sure you may take on a different opinion.

the flaw in your theory is that you're assuming most gays have had a bad

than straight people. Most of my friends had excellent childhoods and are
stable and balanced.

your theory is interesting but not necessarily true. I might be tempted to
believe you if I didn't know way too many people who have had a relatively
easy and well adjusted life and who are completely balanced. yeah, alot of
gays are screwed up in the head but so are just as many straights. The
fact is that so many gays are screwed up in the head from dealing with a
society that doesn't accept them. So basically, your theory is flawed.

for that info and for responding. I was wondering what is a typical day
for you and paul? do you guys have regular jobs? How do you guys plan on
spending new years eve?
I also want to comment that i do not believe that homo/bi/ sexuality is
normal as compared to the majority of society (straight). I think that
most people chose to be that way, some are victims of a traumatic
experience, and very little are actually born that away(highly
unlikely). I am not trying to put anyone down please understand that.
However, i do consider the fact that human beings as a whole is a
working progress and i do consider the fact that maybe being a human
being is more complex than we think and not just black and white in
terms of sexuality and among other things. I am trying to keep an open
mind about this and watching danny and paul the other night i thought to
myself that they look very much in love and that there is something
truly special in their relationship. I thought that it just wasn't
physical, but deeper and more profound in reality. I saw two lost souls
that have found each other and have become one. I thought it was
beautiful and made me think that love is love no matter what shape or
form it takes.

every corner we turned it seemed like there was another person asking.
It was quite frightening since it was the first time I'd ever been in a
big city. We stayed at the Fairfield Inn (i think) downtown by hooters
and the peachtree plaza mall thing. My question is, are there any other
placs in atlanta that have a lot to do, but isn't is ghetto as downtown?

and I still hate Queer as Folk. we watched it the other night for the
first time in a long time and I still feel the same about it. It's
oversexualized for easy viewing and bad writing. There was an orgy scene
where the over-the-top mom walked into and walked around the room because
she wanted to have one of her serious, "i'm concerned" conversations with
one of the guys. Give me a break!

Yes, it makes a ton of sense...I'm a psych major and use a ton of
communication...although, I still end up in lTR with straight guys...but
thats another topic...here's the thing guys...I was raised on midwestern
values...I believe in monogomy...After I moved to chicago, the value
system of the gay community really turned me off...Most of the gay
people I have encountered here are shallow and so are thier
relationships (esp with guys in my age group)...I'm afraid that if I do
find someone here that thier values will lend them to view cheating as
not a problem...that's were my friend came into the pic when we were
talking...he was saying guys are sexually driven so cheating is
inevitable...that alone seems shallow, and has turned me off. I know
this might offend someone, but it is an issue that I am wrestling
with..does this make sense at all?

what I have heard many people say is that, men by nature are promiscuous
and when you have 2 men together, there is even more of a tendency that
they will want to have multiple partners, but what I believe is that s e
x is only a small part of a relationship. You need to build on a
foundation of trust and love and again, communicate what you feel and
want. Not every person wants an open relationship but make certain you
communicate your feelings with your partner in the beginning and all
during your relationship. Don't let it go on "auto pilot". My bf's
sister had told her husband (before they were married) that she did not
want kids and that was great with him because he didn't want them
either. Well after they got married she decided she wanted kids and had
them and I think to this day her husband is somewhat resentful for this.

Hello everyone, this is my first post to the chat board, I have been an
occasional viewer of the board, every since I learned about Danny's
website way back when but never posted on it. I saw that Paul was on
here, and wanted to say it's nice to finally put a face to the blur.
Until I saw Danny on the really world I was really uncomfortable with
the fact that I was gay ( I was 22 at the time of the show) But seeing
him let me see that it's ok, and that cool guys are out there. I grew up
in a very small catholic town, and went to a catholic university, so I
didn't have much of any exposure, all my thoughts and ideas about being
gay where based on very stereotypical portals. But the RW showed a very
real gay person in Danny and Paul, and for that I thank the RW and Paul
and Danny.

I'm young, but I don't know that much about gays in the military. I just
think I'm mature enough to figure out that if a life wants to serve a
country risking everything they have for other peoples freedom.. they
should be able to express themselves the way they want, instead of
hiding behind some poser make-up.

ONE SMALL BIT OF ADVICE, COLLEGE OPENS DOORS YOU WONT EVEN IMAGINE
POSSIBLE. DONT RUSH THINGS, BEING GAY SHOULDN'T BE WHO YOU ARE BUT JUST A
PART OF YOUR LIFE. PARENTS DO GET OVER IT IN TIME BUT DON'T THINK YOU HAVE
TO TELL THEM NOW TO COMPLETE YOUR LIFE, YOU'LL KNOW THE RIGHT TIME WHEN IT
COMES AROUND.
EASY TO SAY FOR ME BECAUSE IM NOT 19. YOUR A LOT MORE IN TOUCH WITH YOUR
LIFE THAN I WAS AT THAT AGE! YOUR NOT ALONE, EVEN IN ASHVILLE.
DANNY AND SPENT NEW YEARS THERE TWO YEARS AGO AND EVERYONE WAS PRETTY
RECEPTIVE AND KIND.
I WAS STATIONED AT FT. BRAGG AND LIVED IN THE GOOD OLE NC FOR TWO YEARS!
SMALL WORLD AND IT JUST GOES TO SHOW YOU THAT IT IS A SMALL WORLD.
I THINK IM MORE INSPIRED BY YOU TRYING TO FIND YOURSELF AT 19.
TAKE CARE AND YOU HAVE FRIENDS

First off, Hi How Are you? My Name is Adam. This is my first time
visiting the message board, i heard of the site through a friend and i
like it, it's great!
I am 19, i still live at home with my parents, i am gay, there isn't
anyone that knows that but a few people, very close friends(2 to be
exact), Noone in my family knows, i don't know if they suspect but i
doubt it. The Majority of them would probably never talk to me again
(and if that is true i would never want to talk to them again because i
don't need people like that in my life)
Anyway, i live in a small NC city and alot of the people here including
my family aren't very supportive of anything "gay". That is very hard
for me,VERY hard, i don't know what to do, i mean, i'm 19, going to
college, working, living at home still in the ignorance that is
Asheville, i want to live my life, i don't want to be afraid of being
myself, noone should have to go through that. it has come to a point
where something needs to be done because it's getting to be too much for
this 19 yr old scared kid. i have always said i want to move away and
just basicly start over somewhere where noone knows me but with school,

Check out "Out in the Real World" December 29 at 10:30 p.m. ET, and
these letters written to you, by two guys with a unique and inspiring
story.
"The Real World" has given us lots of compelling characters and story
lines over the years. But few have been quite as memorable or as timely as
the story of Danny and Paul.
Danny Roberts was a Georgia boy, fresh out of school in early 2000, who
figured living in a house in New Orleans and having his life filmed 24/7
might be fun. But fun turned to drama turned to paranoia because of
Danny's new boyfriend, a U.S. Army captain known only as "Paul." Because
of the military's policy of "Don't ask, don't tell," which bars openly gay
service, Paul could not reveal his identity. So, thanks to "The Real
World" producers' solution, he became "the guy behind the blur." To this
day all we've ever seen of Paul is a blurred-out face and clothing.
That all changes on the MTV News Now special "Out in the Real World," when
Paul finally unveils himself. The show includes never-before-aired footage
of Paul's arrival at the house in New Orleans, and features Paul and Danny
talking about how their relationship became a nervous existence of
constantly worrying whether their secret would be found out, with Paul's
career — and possibly his safety — on the line. How many of our
relationships could survive that kind of tension? But theirs not only
survived, it's stronger because of it.
- John Norris
*****
Danny's Letter: A Face To Show
When "Real World New Orleans" aired in 2000, a lot of media outlets hailed
Paul as "finally putting a face" to the issue of the military's "Don't
ask, don't tell" policy that became so associated with us as a couple.
When we first met and I subsequently did the show, I had no clue that the
issue would become such an overwhelming focus around us, nor did I even
personally know much about the policy. I was just like most of America's
young people, that is, unaware of what the military had to say about gays.
"Finally, I can say that today we have made the decision to literally put
a face with the issue and share one story of how misunderstanding and
discrimination directly affect people's lives. "
But when we met in December of 1999, I began a major transformation in my
life that affected so many areas of my being. One major way was that I
quickly learned a deep lesson about the policy and what it means for so
many people in our country. In fact, I learned a deep, personal lesson
that so few have or ever will experience. Having lived in New Orleans
behind the lens forced me into the public light and a huge part of that
was dragging the one I loved into something that neither of us was ready
for or willing to deal with at the time. To tell the truth, it was a
pretty stressful and confusing time in both of our lives. We both went
from living our own separate, unassuming lives to suddenly representing a
social, religious and political issue through a pop-culture filter. From
that point on, I began absorbing the meaning of the policy from all
standpoints, and ultimately understood it's so wrong in so many ways and
so against what we are as a nation.
Finally, I can say that today we have made the decision to literally put a
face with the issue and share one story of how misunderstanding and
discrimination directly affect people's lives. What I really want you all
to see through this is that in the big picture, this isn't only about us
and the military's policy of "Don't ask, don't tell." It's ultimately
about thousands of people out there whose lives are so negatively affected
in so many ways when a minority is looked down upon by a cruel majority.
Thanks for the support and much love,
Danny
*****
Paul's Letter: A Good Day To Stand
I can remember what I was doing the day someone died by being strung up to
a fence because of who he was. It wasn't the day that I thought "I need to
stand up for who I am."
Probably I should have.
I can remember what I was doing the day someone died by being beaten to
death with a bat by a fellow soldier who had given an oath to protect and
serve all values that our great nation holds dear. It wasn't the day that
I thought "I need to fight the injustices that are happening to others."
It would've been a good fight.
A couple of years later I met the love of my life and again someone else
took the burden of advocate, not only dealing with being "out to America"
but also providing the nation a "pop culture" look at the military's
"Don't ask, don't tell" policy.
Recently I realized that I've been sitting on the sidelines, living a life
riding on the shoulders of others. We all have. I've always believed that
even a little can help, so it's my time to walk down a road that has
already been paved by so many before me: Matthew Shepard, Barry Winchell,
Leonard Matlovich, Pedro Zamora and James Dale (to name just a few).
Ten years after the "Don't ask, don't tell" policy was enacted by the U.S.
military, the nation (unlike the policy) has changed so much. I believed
"for the better," but if our military is a reflection of our society, then
why is there so much intolerance and hate in the military? Probably my
beliefs were a little optimistic and we have a lot of work ahead of us or
probably the military has a lot of catching up to do.
"When Americans went to the Vietnam Memorial to remember and honor those
who gave their lives fighting ... it never occurred to them that some of
those who were the strongest, bravest and most heroic were also GAY." -
Leonard Matlovich
Why does an institution deny some individuals' basic desire to serve their
country? If you can't answer this question then you can see the need to
abolish a policy that theoretically was a step in the right direction (10
years ago) and start demanding a new policy that reflects the views or our
tolerant society. A lot of growing can happen in 10 years, but this policy
hasn't budged an inch. This is a fight into which I have chosen to throw
my punches, and I believe that it is important to see a face attached to
the words.
I challenge each of you to choose your fight and believe that it's a good
day to stand for what you believe is right.
"Awareness and education can be time-consuming and slow — but well worth
the effort." - Judy Shepard

took a LIRR commuter train from Manhattan and transfered in
Jamaica...except the transfer bus never came to get to JFK. So after being
stranded in the snow outside for about an hour, I was lucky enough to find
a cab that would take me just in time to catch my flight and sit on the

be found going to the airport.

normally we'd have like -10 degrees Centigrade (something like 10
degress F) at this time of the year. Friday we had 10°C (50°F).
Of course city government didn't check that there's no snow and they
scattered little pebbles (I dunno the right english word for that
process) and it's like you're walking in a cloud of dust all the time.
