This nation was also highly based on Roman and Greek laws and ideas but you don't hear much talk about that. In God we trust, yes, but it's more the abstract idea in believing and trusting in what's right and good for the people...not literally tying our govt to a particular religion. Again, many, if not most people came to this country to escape religious persecution and the freedom of religion. That means that our govt doesn't need to be condoning any single religious belief whether it's Christian, bhudist, Islamic, Jesuit and so on.

personally i think that is the most ridiculous statement!

Our country was founded on GOD. 'In God we Trust' is on our Money. Our pledge of allegance. If people in this country didn't have their faith in God then I believe that a lot of things in the country wouldn't be here today without that faith. I feel it should have stayed there.

It's how they explain much of what they don't understand in the world today, which is the result of poor education and a lack of knowledge about the world in general. These people don't like alot of what they see happening in the world and they are trying to close themselves off and explain it all away with "Jesus talk". All of the south isn't his way though. i recognize and appreciate what they did as well but they're almost a relic at this point because so much has changed even recently. To go on acting like things are so horrible is really out of step with the times. Almost half of Americans now feel that gays deserve equal rights and that's a huge step in a positive direction. "Stonewallers" are often the ones who are very out of touch with the real world and wall themselves off into little gay enclaves with no or little contact with people unlike themselves. Maybe that's why they still think that gays are at war.

thatz true. i forget about the "stonewallers" as you call them. i really give credit to them for making it through those times. but back then im guessing it wasn't a big issue as it is today. but i am glad i am going through it with everyone today...there is a lot more help, yet the issues are getting out of hand. especially with the governments

The issue...

also is very much a split between generations. Older gay men who I call "Stonewallers" and who tend to be overly obsessed with gay issues and the gay lifestyle are also of course very much tied to the AIDS cause. That's a good thing and it all makes sense considering the disease really affected thier generation. However, The new movement today is for younger guys to really intergrate themselves into society in general and that means much less focus on gay issues and the lifestyle. I think it's all normal and healthy except for the fact that AIDS as an issue is being pushed aside. It's coming back to bite us and all young people in the#####though.

i think it is sad though that young people feel that they won't get the diseas. im still quite young, but most gay people i know grew up to have safe sex. it is good that the awareness is out there, but it should not be directly targeted towards gays because that forces the hate towards us that we started the disease!

well, first off, I didn't know that you're straight and a supporter but that's awesome and thanks for adding input to the board. as far as HIV goes, I think the main reason is the age of most people on this board. I think young people in general are pretty apathetic to the issue of HIV because it has been talked to death and people pretty much know the facts. However, young people do think they're invincible and would never think they could catch it. Another factor is that I think many young gays are sick of the issue because it has really been pushed into our laps as being a gay-only disease. I think that has caused a backlash against wanting to even discuss the issue.
D

I've posted an article about it last week and it didn't even rate a response. It's in the L.A. Times archives now, so I will need to extract it so that I can post it again. I think it's important. It may be embarrassing to talk about but embarrassment is better than death.

I admit that I am a recent straight PFLAG supporter of gay rights, so I don't have to face this scourge myself. But many young gays whom I advise seem to think they are invulnerable, immortal......which is not the case. Gay Pairing/partnering is a very good way to prevent HIV,....that is if the partners do not have an "open" relationship.

Okay, I'll get off my soap box....

BUT PLEASE,....THINK ABOUT IT !!!!

Yes, there are still huge numbers of gays catching the disease but the largest percentage increase now is among heterosexual, young blacks and latinos.

Also, I'm tired of gay ment thinking this ISN'T a gay disease..an overwhelming majority of new cases IN THE UNITED STATES are of gay men, keep it real guys. Additionally, I think part of the complacency has come with these new drugs and how they can prolong your life. It's a big red herring.. who wants to take 8,000 pills a day and deal with the side effects? There is a difference between "living" and "staying alive"..people just don't get it.

Being independant can be good for you and there's nothing wrong with it. However, there's something very wrong with being codependant and too many gay guys fall into that category. Peter transcends jazz, embracing even those that don't consider themselves jazz fans This guy is amazing. He's a 20 year old singer, composer and pianist.

I saw him perform in Holland several years ago, and now he's finally breaking more into a mainstream audience. His sound is very clever, and very cool to get into.

Even better, he's here in Seattle this week at Jazz Alley. Definitely check him out if you're looking for something new and refreshing. I'm going tonight with a couple friends.

Its occurred to me that we could very well see a backlash against gays that isn't all unlike that which African Americans saw in the 50's and 60's. However, I think the situation for gays is different. While there are undoubtably people who have passionate opinions on either side of the issue of gay rights (marriage, anti-discrimination), these days it feels that most Americans really could careless either way. This is very representative of how the American psyche works in the 21st century versus the mid 20th.

I don't know about the people here but there are way too many guys out there who do live in a gay fantasy world where everyting is gay and they've lost touch with alot of reality. However, alot of hate exists out there from people who don't care if you live in a gay fantasy world or not and who are going to hate you no matter how well adjusted you are. Regardless, there are just as many gays out there who want nothing to do with the straight world as vice versa.

Sometimes I think some of you guys that come here live in a world that is way too 'gay' --- I know being gay is a big part of you, but the only thing that's really different is your sexual preference. When you start to separate yourself from other folks, that's when things get ugly. When I first came out, I really thought that I needed to be part of some gay community of some sort - to help me deal and understand, but after about a month or so, I was back with my old friends doing what I did, but with a change: I dated guys openly and went out to dinner with other couples - gay or straight. I know I kind of changed the topic here and I'm not trying to get anything started, but sometimes I think some of you guys that are here every single solitary day of the week, need to get out more and realize that there is a whole world who will accept it - and if they don't, you shouldn't always think it's because you're gay - maybe it's because you lock yourself into a way you're supposed to be and they're not comfortable with it - just like you may not be comfortable with someone who is always talking about being Islamic - day in, day out - and everything they put in your face has to do with the Nation of Islam. Just tell them not to hate, but to congratulate.

about this the other day. I really think a huge backlash against gays might begin to happen soon as the visibility of gays increases and equal rights are on the table. There are many out there who are determined from letting gays live in peace and this could be the beginning of something ugly.

I am in Boston actually. I had a college lecture in Waltham which is just outside of Boston, so I flew into Logan for the lecture and I was to fly out of Logan to go home. I was supposed to fly out at 5 from the Logan Airport here in Boston, but obviously that's not going to happen. I probably sound all disjointed and crazy, but I am a little overwhelmed. I am in the boiler room of the Marriott borrowing the engineer's computer because the internet access in the business center was down. I will be stuck here in Boston until someone tells me different. I just want to say thank you to all of you who are concerned. I am very gracious that I didn't get on the flight, but I am also very much sad for those who lost their lives on all of those flights or in all those buildings in Washington and New York. Julie was going to fly standby on that flight, but overslept and was into a whole bunch of other stuff, so thank goodness for that! I want to say I hope everyone in your family is safe. My heart goes out to everyone. It's a very sad day. Mom, Dad, Marlene, Michael, Maurice, Kera, Anisa and her family, Jason, Jason's entire family, my brother-in-law Marvin, Jeff, Michelle, Cheryl, Penna and everybody in my family, Kelley, Peter, Matt, Julie, Jamie, Danny, Paul, David, all my friends, I hope you are well......
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It goes on at length mentioning Jisela, Coral, Lori, her friends and associates.

Hmmm. Do I believe Melissa's version of events? Or should I believe Danny?

hey ctoc...how do you feel about the 10 commandments in Alabama? Go to CNN.com and vote.

As for the documentary last night, it was all unbelievable, yet not surprising. It shows though how things are changing quickly in the workplace in America. That doc was pretty old and most of the situations have really changed, especially with Cracker Barrel. Can you believe they claim it never was their policy?! I didn't eat there for years until they finally reversed their policy. The stock Trader's story was incredible and talk about adults acting like children. The best part was the hicks in Georgia quoting the bible as saying that "homosexuals should be assasinated...and that there's no worse abomination than gays except for Jews!" I love that quote because it showed how hateful these people were not just against gays, but against anyone not like them. idiots.

For me, it's not focusing on oppressors, it's about having a deep understanding of how oppression works without pointing fingers.

I'm not the kind to point fingers or to fixate. Instead, I see understanding oppression as a way of better understanding why things are the way they are. I also find it rather fascinating actually.

When I was younger, I never understood the origin of so much of the bull#### that exists in our society. Having a better understanding now has really allowed me to be more open to people, and living in Seattle has really caused me to think about things.

when faced with overt discrimination face to face, action should obviously be taken. But, some things are out of an individuals hands and that's when it's important not to let another man's hate rain on your parade. That's when you must live your life in defiance of what others expect you to be and show them otherwise. Don't let it get to you so much because you're letting them win. I think it also has alot to do with living in Seattle. I think you feel extremely issolated and are confusing that with being surrounded by racism. I don't think alot of people here are racists, they're just extremely white and have no connection with a world of color. That would be difficult for anyone to deal with. It's human nature to want to be around those more like yourself. You should head back to Atlanta with me when I go.

i agree with your comments but i'm interested in knowing where you feel personal responsibility should come in?

where is the defining moment between dealing with the continious hardships associated with being a part of an oppressed group, and taking responsibility for yourself as a single entity?

That is where my dilemma lies.

there's some truth to this but it's not all truth. I also think it's very negative for minorities to be overly fixated on who is keeping you down. That only adds fuel to the negative fire. I get sick of gays doing the same thing. It's important to pick up your dignaty and do something about what's wrong instead of just griping about it. That's how things really change.

Here's the passage:

Black people living in an imperialist, white supremacist, capitalist, patriarchial culture are daily subjected to shaming. The entire world of advertising and the mass media in general, which sends both the covert and overt message that blackness is negative, is part of the propoganda machinery of shaming. No black child who watches television every day for even a few hours can escape the indoctrination of white supremacist-based aesthetics that relentlessly convery the message that to be black is to be defective, flawed.

What do you think? Or is this merely more griping?
