I didn't understand what was going on when he contacted me yesterday after you emailed him. I was guessing that you were the Jim, but wasn't sure. So, Your people need to contact him again. yeah, you're right...i still have a slight accent. But that's the difference between an accent and a dialect. You must not be from the south because then you wouldn't be able to distinguish my accent. Most people here think I speak like someone from the north. (which is not true). You probably couldn't understand many southerners. I even have a hard time in some areas.

Peter and "the South"
Posted by Danny on 8/23/2001 at 11:21:38
IP: 24.25.36.70

Peter,
you're very correct about accents and speech patterns. I had an accent when i was younger, but as I grew up, i learned to speak more properly. That's not to say that an accent dictates being uneducated. It is a fact though, that if you want to be taken seriously, you must have the ability to speak outside your regional dialect. If you can't, you'll always be limited in this world.

As for stereo-typing the South, well, Stereotypes exist for a reason and it's true. Of course uneducated people exist in every corner of this planet. The South just has a chronic problem with it. Education isn't generally valued as much as in other parts of the country. Test scores prove it time and time again. The highest drop-out rate is in the south. probably 40% of my class dropped out. Then very few go to college in the South. So don't tell me that "it's a stereotype and not true."

JL...that's very true. Even at college, everything is still highly segregated. That shocked me. I couldn't believe that blacks and whites still liked to sit apart at dinner.
It's lame and that's one thing I hate about the south. The hate and segregation comes from all sides too. It's not only whites that are guilty of it.

Irish Joey...i have no clue what part my family is from. I'm not as obsessed with it as Paul is. I'm American now so I don't really care I guess. I just know that my Mom's side is Irish.

as for accents...a true southern accent is sexy...like the Texan accent for example. The problem today is that the old southern accent has been widely corrupted by a more vulgar, uneducated "hill-billy" accent and the two have joined to form this hideous, slow speech. I have to say that the New York, New Jersey accent is equally vulgar and hideous.

good question...I noticed the same thing, but here's why I think that's true. First of all Birmingham and Memphis are very small cities compared to Atlanta. Both would easily fit inside the perimeter. I think the latino culture has isolated itself in part because there are so many of them. When you have a large minority sub-culture, they tend to collect somewhere. Why do blacks collect on the south side? Why do gays collect in mid-town? why do asians collect on the west side? People who are similar like to collect together, especially when they're tossed into a huge fish pond. Another reason for the latino separation is the fact that most of them speak little or no english. Most of the immigrants coming to the south are extremely poor and a huge number of them are illegal. That's the main reason.

2lk...It excites me to see people from other countries on here. It's amazing! I appreciate your insightful and intelligent post. Paul and I take as much part in this site as possible and chat here as much as possible. So many new people come and go that it would be easy to miss them if we didn't do so. As far as acceptance, I think gays are definitely well on the path to general acceptance. Paul and I were just talking about that yesterday. I think i'm a little more optimistic, but maybe he's a little more realistic. In any terms, we're moving in a positive direction and I think it just takes optimism and patience. It's not going to happen over night and we just need to accept the fact, not push the issue too forcefully and work to educate and set positive examples.

Of course parents are to blame for kids being spoiled! Who else would be to blame? Parents are extremely guilty in this country for not being involved. I get so sick of politicians, etc for blaming America's youth for all these problems. Everytime thier a school shooting they blame it on music, movies or kids being lazy, etc. What I ask everytime is "where are the parents"? Parents just aren't doing thier job these days and I think that's the ultimate cause of most of America's youth problems.

more controversy
Posted by Danny on 8/18/2001 at 17:15:15
IP: 24.25.36.70

I guess i'll go ahead and stir up some more controversy after reading these posts. Basically this has to do with the military and their stance. In the past when I was more ignorant of the issue, I felt the same was as many of you do. I felt that the military shouldn't be excluding gays and that it's not right. I still fundamentally feel this way, but now that i've been more educated on the issue (from Paul and a few others who are in the military) I feel differently. Now my stance is basically this...The military is a reflection of our society. How does the majority of our society feel? well, that homosexuality isn't right. Therefore, to keep gays out is to keep gays safe. You can't just throw gays into the military and have it accepted over night. Let's face it, there are many guys in the military who just don't accept it and will do anything to stop gays from being there. Barry Winchell ring a bell? So, until gays are more widely accepted in society, gays will not be accepted in the military. I think the current policy of "don't ask, don't tell" is most appropriate and look forward to the day when things do change, which eventually they will. Those of you who disagree I say to you this, Go join the army and see how long you last out of the closet.

Glad some of you are reading the journal and responding. Were any of you ever in the scouts? I was back in the day and the funny part of it was that my first homosexual experience happened then. Well, not full on experience. Basically a guy came on to me and at the time, I wanted no part of it. My troop was probably 30% gay (closeted of course including a scout master), which is hilarious in light of their current exclusion.

What's up guys...i haven't been around lately because i've lost access to my account controls, due to the fact that this account it outdated. We'll be updating this board soon so that I can get back to posting in color. Until then, take it easy. I'll be updating my journal page later this week so look for that.

Sorry man, but i'm feeling no sympathy here. It's funny because on thing I like to talk about when I speak is basically getting some balls and living your life for you. Oh the irony. If you want to meet, get your#####there and listen. Think it would be really good for you.

The other question about Bucknell, I always hang around for a bit after I speak and talk to people one on one, as long as it's not a huge school where there are just too many people and I get overwhelmed.

easy...for future reference, take the train from arts center station or midtown station...both are in midtown. Take the train south from there and it ends at the airport. Very simple, easy and quick. You get right off the train and if you're flying Delta, they'll check you right in. You can't be living in the A.T.L. without knowing marta kid!

Trust issues in relationships are always fun. This will be a good test for you and him...for you to prove yourself and him to learn to trust you. Trust is NO 1 in a good relationship I think.

sorry to hear that atlboi...there's nothing worse than not having airconditioning in Atlanta in July and August. The heat could kill a man in minutes. I experienced that my first year of college. I lived in one of the old, original dorms at uga, which had no AC. What a nightmare. Imagine trying to study in 105 degrees and 98 percent humidity. Yeah right.

massage and sports therapy is just the beginning of my career path. I want to own my own business while i'm young and have the drive for it. Eventually, when i'm more settled and experienced, I go to grad school to study a field that I have true passion for. I plan on spending my entire life studying and always making changes as far as a career goes. There are so many fields that I have interest in.

I chose it because I believe in the health benefits; I want to work in a health care related field; I want to work on my own terms, my own hours; I want to own my own business.

The Scholarship
Posted by Danny on 8/1/2001 at 19:07:50
IP: 24.25.38.48

My rough idea is that I'm looking for students who are A) planning on studying abroad and B) who are taking part in a community outreach program or are working to make change in their community. The main point that will have to be met for the scholarship is the great need for monetary help. That's the reason I decided to do this scholarship in the first place. Going through college is tough enough and even more challenging when you're having to constantly struggle to pay for it.

I partially agree with you, but also disagree. I understand the possibilities that cloning could bring, but at this point, I don't think humans are ready for it. I think it's still too new and we shouldn't be fooling with nature in such a way. Have you ever read Brave New World? I think bad things could easily happen with a new technology is barely understood. Nuclear energy is a beautiful illustration. can anyone say Chernobal?

There are always people posting on here to contact their congressman about this and that, such and such issue. Here's what I wonder: do these people actually contact their congressman themselves or are they just posting issues for the hell of it to make conversation. You can't just tell someone to do that. You've got to make them want to...get them interested in the issue. Spark debate, etc.

when I was your age, I was too busy running around in the woods to even know what gay was. I just went along with all my buds, played basketball and chased girls. I was preocuppied with the norm to think about guys, even though i was having experiences with a straight friend at the time. I just didn't chalk it up to being gay. Just thought it was being curious and having fun, but never thought anything seriously of it.

hmmmm...that depends on what vibes you're getting from this girl. If she's giving reciprocal vibes, then i'd give it a shot, but in general, I say stay clear of trying to get romantic with friends. It's bad news waiting to happen. You could ruin a friendship that way.
